Al Toon

The 2015 Red Smith Award will be presented to three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver and all time Wisconsin Badger great Al Toon, according to Banquet Chairman Paul McCann. The Red Smith Award is given annually to a person that has made significant contribution to sports in Wisconsin. The presentation will be made at the 50th annual Red Smith Sports Award Banquet on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 6:30 pm at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton, Wisconsin.

Al Toon came to the University of Wisconsin from Newport News, VA and fashioned a tremendous football and track and field career with the Badgers from 1982-1984. He was back-to-back first-team All-Big Ten wide receiver. Toon left UW holding the school records for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Toon was also a three-time Big Ten triple jump champion, and an All-American in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump.

The New York Jets selected Toon with the tenth pick of the 1985 NFL Draft. Toon played his entire NFL career (1985-1992) for the Jets. Toon was a three-time All-Pro selection and named to the Pro Bowl each year from 1986-1988.   Following his retirement, Toon was inducted into the New York Jets Ring of Honor.
